The Number on the Pack: What a THC Percentage Really Means

Look at any pack of high-THC seeds and somewhere on the label is a number: twenty-five percent, twenty-eight, 30. It is printed with as much confidence as the seed count, and it is nothing like as certain. The seed does not carry a percentage; it carries a potential, while the number on the pack is a record of how near to that ceiling one grower, with one set of conditions, once got. Sellers such as https://potentthcseeds.com list lines carrying lab-tested results up to 30 percent, and this article sets out to be a map to what stands in the space between that number and the jar on your own shelf: where the figure is produced, where it moves, what the you can control and what the seed decides before it is ever planted.

What Was Actually Tested

A THC percentage on a seed pack originates from a laboratory test of dried flower. Someone, usually the breeder or a trusted evaluation grower, ran the line, selected a plant, took a few grams, and sent it to a lab. The lab reported THC content as a share of dry weight and issued a report. The number on the pack is almost always the best result from that work, rather than the average.

Three things come from this. The number refers to a one phenotype out of a pack that contains several. It describes that plant in the breeder’s conditions, which are rarely average. And it refers to a sample cut from somewhere on the plant, usually the top of the best cola, where resin density is greatest. Potent THC Seeds publishes the lab report for every listed figure, including the number of plants grown out, which is 12 plants on most recent lines, so the spread is visible next to the peak.

Two Numbers That Look Like One

Read a lab report and the largest figure is normally THCA, the acid precursor that the growing plant produces. THCA converts to THC under heat, and during the conversion it loses a small group, and that takes roughly twelve percent of its weight along with it. A flower reading twenty-five percent THCA contains about twenty-two percent potential THC after heated.

Many seed packs quote the THCA number because it is the bigger one. Some include the small amount of already-converted THC to it without the weight adjustment, and this inflates the figure further. None of this is fraud, exactly; it is common practice, but the practice leans towards the higher figure. The accurate way to compare between two lines is using “total THC”, worked out as THC plus roughly 0.88 times THCA, and a certificate that gives that figure separately is worth something.

Phenotype Variance

Run a whole pack of a high-THC line and the results will not each match the label. Also in a stable line the range between the lowest and highest plant can be five or more percentage points, and in a loose line it can be far wider. The number on the pack sits at the top of that range; most plants land lower below it.

This is not a failure in the seed, it is how sexual reproduction works. Cuttings reproduce a one plant; seeds reproduce a gene pool. For the grower it has a single concrete lesson: running several seeds and selecting the best frosty female is the only method to approach the label number consistently, and a grower who runs one seed and expects the advertised result is gambling on the draw they did not realise they had joined.

Ceiling and Floor

The clearest way to think is as two limits for any plant. The ceiling is set by the seed: the maximum THC that plant can reach under ideal care. No feeding schedule, light or method raises it. The floor is set by the room: how far below the ceiling the plant finishes because something was missing.

The great majority of home grows finish well beneath the ceiling, and the distance is almost always environmental. And this points to a conclusion the seed market seldom admits: for a grower not already reaching the ceiling of a twenty-percent line, a 30-percent line will hardly make much difference. The additional potential sits unused over the same limits. Buying higher genetics makes sense after the current ones are being finished near to the ceiling.

The Five Things the Grower Controls

From seed and jar lie a handful of factors that account for almost the whole gap, and not one of them is complicated.

  • Drying and curing. Fast, hot drying destroys terpenes and converts THC to CBN; a slow drying and a proper cure hold the potency and the profile which gives it feel character.
  • Sample selection. The lab tested the top of the best cola. Shaded buds on the very same plant test weaker; a grower comparing their entire harvest against the label number is comparing the lot with a single best.
  • Plant health through flower. Nutrient mistakes, insects and stress in the last month pull the plant’s energy aside from trichome development. A healthy, untroubled plant finishes nearer its ceiling.
  • Light intensity in flower. Trichome output follows light intensity until a ceiling the majority of small lamps do not reach. Underlit flowers end up looser and weaker regardless of the genetics.

How the Numbers Got Inflated

Forty years ago a measured THC content above ten percent was exceptional. Selective breeding towards resin, controlled growing and better testing moved the typical number higher through the following decades, and somewhere in that climb the percentage turned from a measurement into a selling point.

When customers started choosing by the figure, sellers started producing figures: testing more samples and keeping the highest, quoting THCA as THC, using labs reputed for high results. None of these practices altered any seed. The plants genuinely improve, but the distance between the stated figure and the real result widened more quickly than the genetics did. A figure of 30 percent in the current market needs the same scrutiny as any number: tested by whom, from what number of plants, and stated as THCA or as total THC.

Diminishing Returns Above Twenty

Here is a fact the number does not capture: above a given level, the felt change between shrinks. The gap between ten and twenty percent is unmistakable to anyone; the difference between twenty-five and thirty is frequently lost behind the effect of the aroma profile, minor cannabinoids, how the flower was dried and the way it was used.

This does not render the number useless; it makes it a single factor among several. A well-grown, properly cured twenty-two percent flower with a full terpene profile routinely reads as more potent than a rushed twenty-eight. For a buyer choosing seeds, the useful reading is simple: treat the percentage to exclude low-potency lines, and after that choose among the strong ones on aroma, growth habit and breeder reputation, not by the last few percent.

A Buyer’s Checklist

All of the above reduces to a few questions that are worth asking of any seed pack ahead of ordering.

  • Is the lab identified and the report available? Unverifiable numbers are claims, whatever they look like.
  • Is the number stated as THCA, THC or total THC? Total is the comparable one; THCA alone overstates by roughly a twelfth.
  • Is a spread shown, or just a single top figure? A range suggests several plants were tested; a single figure usually indicates one.
  • Does the seller say a word about growing setup? “At strong light, harvested at week ten” gives you something; nothing gives you none.

Before You Buy

Potent THC Seeds sends each order in plain packaging with the original packs intact inside and nothing on the outside to indicate the contents. Orders to the United States are not accepted, because seed import is restricted there. Seed law varies sharply by country: in a good number of places owning seeds is legal as souvenirs while germinating them is not, and in others the two are allowed under local rules or both is. Checking the position where you live is the buyer’s job, and nothing of this article is legal advice.
